Since May 2024, Prof. Dr. med. Hakan Kaymak has held the Gottfried O.H. Naumann Endowed Professorship for Epidemiology and Prevention of Myopia at Saarland University in Homburg/Saar. His academic work focuses on the development and evaluation of innovative therapeutic strategies aimed at slowing the progression of myopia. 

In parallel with his university role, Prof. Kaymak is a leading ophthalmologist at the Breyer Kaymak Klabe Macula-Retina-Myopia Center in Düsseldorf, where he regularly treats patients. 

He is also a founding partner of the Internationale Innovative Ophthalmochirurgie GbR (I.I.O.)—a research-driven institution dedicated to advancing ophthalmic surgery through clinical studies, innovative treatments of myopia and the implementation of cutting-edge technologies.

  •  Prof. Dr. med. Kaymak’s involvement in myopia research began as early as 1996, during his doctoral work under Prof. Frank Schaeffel.
  • He was among the first scientists to explore the use of low-dose atropine (0.01%) as a potential intervention to reduce myopia progression in children—a treatment approach now gaining global relevance.
