The Growing Burden of Myopia: A Call to Action from the European Society of Myopia
We aim to erase borders between European countries to exchange and work together for myopia control In recent years, the global prevalence of myopia has continued to rise at an alarming rate, representing a growing public health concern with significant societal implications. Data from European population and health surveys indicate a nearly myopia double increase over the past 20 years in the young adult population. The prevalence of myopia is definitely rising in European populations, where rates approximate 40% among young adults in Europe. This high incidence is reflected in escalating healthcare costs.
These figures underscore the growing medical and socioeconomic burden associated with the condition. Moreover, when myopia progresses to its pathologic form, it can result in irreversible structural damage to the retina and optic nerve, leading to low vision and in severe cases, to permanent blindness. Given the accelerating prevalence of myopia globally, it is imperative to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for the prevention, control and management of progressive and pathologic myopia.
Continued investment in education, basic and clinical research is essential to deepen our understanding of the disease mechanisms and to identify efficient interventions. The European Society of Myopia highlights the relevant role of international cooperation in tackling this global issue. We express our intent to work closely with international organisations to advance research, improve clinical practice, and ultimately reduce the burden of myopia worldwide. We sincerely thank all members and partners for their strong support, cooperation, and shared commitment to addressing the myopia epidemic.
