Professor Hammond heads one of the leading groups examining the genetic epidemiology of common eye diseases, including myopia, partly through his work with the TwinsUK cohort over the last 25 years and the UK Biobank Study. 

He has led international consortia studying the genetics of myopia and in 2020 published the largest ophthalmic genome-wide study of refractive error to date including over 500,000 participants. 

He is a paediatric ophthalmologist and strabismologist, and manages children with simple and high myopia and is involved in several myopia control clinical trials.
