She is on the Executive Bureau of the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS) and is a leading global voice in childhood myopia management and paediatric eye care. 

Dr Leo has been a lead author of the WSPOS Myopia Consensus Statements (2016, 2023, 2025), Her clinical expertise spans paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, and cataract surgery. She also contributes actively to policy and ethics, serving on various Ministry of Health panels, National Childhood Myopia Protocol Working Group, Singhealth Centralised Institutional Review Board A graduate of the National University of Singapore (MBBS) and recipient of the Gold Medal and Book Prize in Ophthalmology, she completed her specialist training in Singapore before embarking on 2 clinical fellowships in the United States. 

She trained at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor under Professors Monte Del Monte and Steven Archer and subsequently at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, with Professor Kenneth Wright. Dr Leo is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd Ophth), Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS), Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). Her research has contributed substantially to understanding myopia epidemiology, optical interventions, and paediatric eye diseases. She has published in leading journals such as Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science and Ophthalmic Epidemiology. Her 2003 paper on modulation transfer function in children received the Eye Institute–Pfizer Research Prize, and she has been recognised internationally with awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Best Poster, 2010) and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (Achievement Award, 2017). 

Over the past two decades, Dr Leo has performed live surgeries, conducted instructional course and delivered more than 100 invited lectures globally, including at AAO, ESCRS, APACRS, WCPOS, and the International Myopia Summit. Recent lectures include “Combination Therapy for Myopia Control” (IMS 2025) and “ROP and Myopia” (Floretina 2024). Her international presence reflects her dual commitment to advancing evidence-based practice and bridging research with clinical application. 

 

Additional information

Beyond academia, Dr. Leo is active in training and mentorship, teaching medical students, residents, and optometry trainees. 

She has coordinated teaching programmes, supervised research projects, and mentored young ophthalmologists. 

She is a recognised advocate for child vision health, having led multiple national eye screening and public education initiatives. 

A passionate clinician and educator, Dr Leo continues to champion multidisciplinary and preventive approaches to childhood myopia, combining clinical precision, translational research, and health policy leadership.
